On Metacritic, the first season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy has a score of 74 out of 100 based on 5 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews." The series premiered on April 11, 2013 and was written and directed by Kevin Tancharoen who was also responsible for directing the feature length adaptation. The series is produced by Threshold Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. On June 10, 2011, Variety reported that Warner Bros. would be producing a web series titled "Mortal Kombat: Legacy". This web series will be followed by a full length feature film. On August 30, 2011, it was announced that the series would follow two characters Kitana and Johnny Cage. Both characters are portrayed by Emily Annabeth Hilburn and Casper Van Dien respectively. The filming for season one of Mortal Kombat: Legacy started in September 2011 in Los Angeles before filming for the movie began, but after principal photography ended on August 31, 2011. The first round of casting announcements were released on December 17, 2011 with Jax actor Michael Jai White being announced as the first actor to join the cast. His character was later revealed to be an antagonist in the series. On February 6, 2012, it was announced that WWE champion John Cena would be joining the cast. It was also revealed that he will be playing a new character named Billy Tanuska. Other actors who were chosen for their roles in the series were released over time throughout 2012 and early 2013. The first two episodes of Mortal Kombat: Legacy were released online simultaneously on April 11, 2013. The second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy began airing on July 18, 2013, with all ten episodes being released online weekly beginning on July 25, 2013. Two weeks prior to the premiere date of Season 2 on Machinima's YouTube channel, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution removed the first season from YouTube. All ten episodes of season 1 returned to YouTube on July 25, 2013 following production being moved from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The second season was released exclusively on Machinima's YouTube channel beginning August 1, 2013.
